چکیده

[1] Kuroshio velocity structure and transport in the East China Sea (ECS) were investigated as part of a 23-month study using inverted echo sounders and acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) along the regularly sampled PN-line. Flow toward the northeast is concentrated near the continental shelf with the mean surface velocity maximum located 30 km offshore from the shelf break (taken as the 170 m isobath). There are two regions of southwestward flow: a deep countercurrent over the continental slope beneath the Kuroshio axis and a recirculation offshore which extends throughout the whole water column. There is a bimodal distribution to the depth of maximum velocity with occurrence peaks at the surface and 210 dbar. When the maximum velocity is located within the top 80 m of the water column, it ranges between 0.36 m/s and 2.02 m/s; when the maximum velocity is deeper than 80 m, it ranges between 0.31 m/s and 1.11 m/s. The 13-month mean net absolute transport of the Kuroshio in the ECS is 18.5 ± 0.8 Sv (standard deviation, s = 4.0 Sv). The mean positive and negative portions of this net flow are 24.0 ± 0.9 Sv and 5.4 ± 0.3 Sv, respectively.

Multi-core structure of the Kuroshio in the East China Sea from long-term transect observations

Long-term hydrographic temperature and salinity transect data in the East China Sea from June 1955 to November 2001 are analyzed in order to examine the geostrophic velocity and the structure of the Kuroshio current. The structure of the Kuroshio Current is divided into three basic forms, a single-core structure, a double-core structure and a multi-core structure; the appearance percentage of t...

Contribution of the Yangtze River to Ecosystem of the East China Sea

The Yangtze River of the China main land has recorded the decrease of sediment load in these 10 years because of construction of dams in the upstream region. The Three Gorgeous Dam, partly started its operation since July of 2003, has a significant contribution to reduce the sediment load with sedimentation. According to the Yangtze River hydrological report, the amount of discharge and the sed...

The Kuroshio nutrient stream and its temporal variation in the East China Sea

[1] Using in situ data from 88 cruises from 1987 to 2009 in the East China Sea, downstream nutrient flux (the product of velocity and nutrient concentration) and nutrient transport (integration of flux over a section) by Kuroshio were examined. The presence of a maximum nutrient flux core in the middle layer was confirmed. Seasonal variation in the nutrient flux was not significant and was much...

Spatiotemporal patterns of the macrofaunal community structure in the East China Sea, off the coast of Zhejiang, China, and the impact of the Kuroshio Branch Current

The Kuroshio Current intrudes in the bottom layer of the East China Sea continental shelf from the northeast of Taiwan via two bottom branches named the Nearshore Kuroshio Branch Current (NKBC, along the 60 m isobath) and the Offshore Kuroshio Branch Current (OKBC, along the 100 m isobath). However, knowledge on the macrofaunal responses to these bottom branches is limited. This study examined ...

Spatial variations in the Kuroshio nutrient transport from the East China Sea to south of Japan

Based on absolute geostrophic velocity, which was calculated using repeated hydrographic data of 39 cruises from 2000 to 2009 and nitrate concentrations measured in the same areas from 1964 to 2009, we obtained the temporally averaged nitrate flux (the product of velocity and nitrate concentration) and nitrate transport (integration of flux over one section) of four sections across the Kuroshio...
